Sprague, NetZero Chevy Rebound with Fourth-Place Finish at Gateway
MADISON, IL (July 21, 2002) - After a couple of
uncharacteristic weeks featuring crashes and mechanical breakdowns, Jack
Sprague and his No. 24 NetZero Chevrolet returned to form with a
fourth-place finish in the Charter Pipeline 250 NASCAR Busch Series race at
Gateway International Raceway Saturday.
"At least this weekend I'm saying I can't believe
it, but instead it's about having a great run and not a disappointing one,"
said Sprague. "It was extremely hot out there tonight. We really needed
tonight's finish to get everyone's spirits back up. The last few races have
been tough and really hurt us in the points, but we had a great showing
tonight. We led for a number of laps and had pretty good pit stops, so I'm
happy."
Sprague's NetZero Chevy started from the 24th
position after a disappointing qualifying effort that included a spin on the
first of two laps. Despite a tight condition that plagued his NetZero Chevy,
Sprague slowly worked his way toward the front taking over the lead on Lap
80.
Sprague eventually fell to fourth place late in the
event. Despite running lap times comparable to the race winner, Greg Biffle,
Sprague had to settle for the fourth position at the finish and his 12th
Top-10 of the season.
"The NetZero Chevy was extremely hard to handle at
the start of the weekend," said Sprague. "I couldn't believe it
when I spun on the first lap in qualifying, but I got it fired back up and
made the
second lap. I'm pretty surprised we ended with a Top-5 considering all the
changes we made to the car."
Sprague's fourth-place effort earned him $32,450 in
prize money and allowed him to maintain the third spot in the 2002 NBS
championship standings with 2694 points, 165 markers behind the
front-running Biffle.
Sprague and the NetZero Chevy will next take to the
track in the NetZero 250 at Pikes Peak International Raceway. The event will
take the green flag Saturday, July 27 at 3:30 p.m. Eastern Daylight Time.
The event will be telecast live on NBC. MRN Radio will also broadcast the
race live worldwide on more than 400 stations including the American Armed
Forces Network.
