Sprague, NetZero Chevy Looking for Past Experience to Help at Phoenix
AVONDALE, AZ (November 3, 2002) - Phoenix International Raceway is one
of Jack Sprague's favorite race tracks. That's because the 1-mile oval has
graced the three-time NASCAR Craftsman Truck Series champion with plenty of
success over the years and he and his Hendrick Motorsports team would like
to add to that this weekend.
"Phoenix is a track I have had a ton of success at during my career," said
Sprague. "It's definitely one of my all-time favorites. It really reminds
me of a bigger Concord Motorsports Park, a place where I was very successful
early in my racing career. I won my first Truck Series race at Phoenix back
in 1995 and it's fun to go back there year after year. Last year, we went to
there focused only on winning our third Truck Series championship and in the
process, walked away with a second-place finish. This year, it's a
whole new ballgame for the NetZero team. It's our first Busch Series race
there and we'll be trying to qualify for the Winston Cup race as well.
We'll be busy, but I feel good about it because of how well I've done in the
past. I'm looking forward to it."
Not
only is Sprague returning to the desert with his No. 24 NetZero Chevy, but
he will attempt to qualify for his third Winston Cup event of the season in
the No. 60 Haas CNC Racing Chevy. Although Sprague has never competed in a
Busch Series event at Phoenix, he has 11 NCTS and one Winston Cup starts
under his belt to work off. In the 11 NCTS starts, Sprague has three wins
and four runner-up finishes to his credit. That success is was Sprague and
his NetZero team are looking to capitalize on this weekend..
"We
did a lot of juggling back at the shop in order to prepare for this
weekend," Sprague said. "When qualifying at Atlanta was rained out, Phoenix
was added and we weren't really prepared. All I know is I'm glad the race
is in Phoenix and not back home in Charlotte because the chances of rain in
Phoenix are slim. The next two races are important for the Haas CNC Racing
team. We're looking for a good finish this weekend so we have notes to work
with next year."
The
Bashas' 200 will take the green flag Saturday, November 9, 2002 at 2 p.m.
Eastern Standard Time. The event will be the 33rdof 34 NASCAR Busch Series
races this season and will be telecast live on NBC. MRN Radio will also
broadcast the race live on more than 300 affiliated stations worldwide.
