TALLADEGA, AL (April 15, 2002) - Jack Sprague has just two career starts
on the highbanks of Talladega Superspeedway, but the three-time NASCAR
Craftsman Truck Series champion knows a lot about speed and that's what you
can expect when Sprague and his No. 24 NetZero Chevrolet Monte Carlo tackle
the world's fastest speedway in Saturday's Aaron's 312.
"Talladega is one of those tracks that's really fast, especially in the
draft," said Sprague. "You can't really use notes from other tracks like
Daytona and Michigan because the corner configurations and the degree of
banking are so much different. What isn't different is the draft and having
a car that can run in it all day. Respect will be the key word for this race
because without that, something big will usually happen."
Sprague,
usually a veteran of multiple starts at almost every track he faces, has
limited experience on the 2.66-mile Talladega highbanks.
"I've
only raced here twice and that was back in the early 90's," said Sprague of
the Alabama speedplant. "Basically, it's a clean slate for us this weekend.
That's when this NetZero team does its best work. Even though we didn't test
at Talladega, I have a feeling the car will be pretty good right from the
get go. I have a lot of faith in my team."
Sprague's previous NBS seat time at the Talladega tri-oval came in 1992 and
1993. The Spring Lake, MI driver came in the (year) Fram 500K with
13th-place qualifying effort and a commendable 15th-place finish to back it
up.
"This
Hendrick Motorsports team has never been to Talladega, so we're all in this
together," said Sprague. "My guess is with our success at Daytona in the
past - both in the NASCAR Craftsman Truck Series and the Busch Series car -
we'll be just fine. The car we're bringing for the race is what we had as a
back up for Daytona. It was actually a Pontiac then, but had a Monte Carlo
body put on for this race. We know it was good then and should be great
now."
Sprague
enters the Aaron's 312 NBS event coming off another second-place finish in
the most recent series race at Nashville Superspeedway. He currently leads
the point standings heading into the 304 Lap Talladega race with 1045
points. Second in the point standings is Randy LaJoie who trails Sprague by
78 points.
"I'm
definitely happy with our second place finish at Nashville, but it sure
would be nice to get a win," said Sprague. "We had a good car all weekend,
but we figured we would. The car we ran had already given us two Top10
finishes this season. We just got snookered on the last caution and wound
up second."
The
Aaron's 312 NASCAR Busch Series race at Talladega Superspeedway will take
the green flag Saturday, April 20 at 1 p.m. Eastern Daylight Time. The
event will be the seventh of 34 NASCAR Busch Series races this season and
will be telecast live on FOX. MRN Radio will also broadcast the race live.
